11 Year Anniversary of the Devastating Earthquake

It was 11 years ago today that the 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Port-au-Prince, Haiti. A country that was already battling political strife and immense poverty was now struck with the tragedy of homes gone to rubble, loss of loved ones, and chaos in the days to come. This earthquake had catastrophic damages that, quite literally, shook Haiti into a spiral of devastating loss. It is estimated that 250,000 lives were lost, and an additional 300,000 individuals were injured.

Haiti’s main airport is located in the capital, Port-au-Prince, which is where the earthquake hit the hardest. With the airport being located so close to the epicenter, this caused significant damages to the airport. Due to the damages, little air traffic was allowed into Haiti, causing it to be tricky to get all the needed supplies and support needed.

LiveBeyond gathered a small team together and was on the ground in Haiti only days after the devastating earthquake hit. No one could have prepared them for what their eyes were about to see. Previous businesses, schools, and homes were now piles of rubble. Tight-knit communities and families were hit with the panic of being displaced. Medical clinics were flooded with injured bodies.

Our team was able to help search for people still trapped under the rubble and aid in medical attention for many injured individuals. Through this response, our hearts became drawn to this beautiful country that was hit with tragedy. The Lord made it clear that this is where LiveBeyond was meant to be. We are so thankful for the years of work and the many loving faces we have met along the way.

Join Us in Prayer

At LiveBeyond, we want to spend this day in reflection and prayer for the continued healing of this country. We have seen the Lord do many good works throughout these 11 years, but we know he still has big plans to come for the people of Haiti. Please join us in prayer today for Haiti’s people as many continue to feel the pain of loss.

“I called on your name, O Lord, from the depths of the pit. You heard my plea: ‘Do not close your ears to my cry for relief.’ You came near when I called you, and you said, ‘Do not fear.'” Lamentations 3: 55-57
