At LiveBeyond, we recently expanded our maternal health program duration from one year post-birth to 1,000 days post-birth. The reason for this is to provide an even greater impact for the amazing mothers and children in our community. Research shows that quality care during the first 1,000 days has great influence on the trajectory of the child’s life. The organization, Thousand Days, provides us with information and statistics in the first 1,000 days of a child’s life.
– The first 1,000 days are when a child’s brain begins to grow and develop and when the foundations for their lifelong health are built.
– Nutrition, in particular, plays a foundational role in a child’s development.
– Poor nutrition in the first 1,000 days can cause irreversible damage to a child’s growing brain, affecting her ability to do well in school and earn a good living. These circumstances can make it harder for a child and her family to rise out of poverty.
Today, we want to share with you how the LiveBeyond maternal health program has been creating change for the infants & children in our region of Thomazeau.
Since the maternal health program began in 2012, we have seen a 50% decrease in infant mortality and a 54% decrease in neonatal mortality in our target area.
While we delight in the progress made, we must continue to strive forward to create more change. Our goal is for more lives to be enriched and saved. Each child and mother deserves quality care and the gift of life. We will not stop fighting for this change!
Recently, we have noticed a plateau in infant mortality. LiveBeyond is working hard to ensure that we are able to continue to decrease the infant mortality rate in our region of Thomazeau, Haiti.
Providing healthcare, nutrition, and education to change the world one life at a time!
