Infant Nutrition: The Importance of Early Intervention

Here are some statements from the World Health Organization (WHO) on the importance of infant nutrition.

“Proper infant nutrition is fundamental to a child’s continued health, from birth through adulthood.”

“Correct feeding in the first three years of life is particularly important due to its role in lowering morbidity and mortality, reducing the risk of chronic disease throughout their life span, and promoting regular mental and physical development.”

“In many countries less than a fourth of infants have access to the required dietary diversity and feeding frequency.”

“Inappropriate feeding practices contribute up to a third of all cases of child malnutrition.”

“Breastfeeding has been shown to be of critical importance to a child’s development.”

These facts presented by WHO are why LiveBeyond puts a huge focus on caring for the infants and children in the Thomazeau community. As WHO states, early nutrition is setting the trajectory for the future of the child’s life. That is why we find it so important to focus on the youngest of individuals. Early intervention helps create a more stable community in the long run. LiveBeyond has already reduced the rate of infant mortality significantly in the Thomazeau region. We will not stop there, we will continue to strive for an even greater reduction in child malnutrition.

We are on a mission to eradicate malnutrition in the Thomazeau community. For this reason we put a heavy emphasis on the infants in our maternal health program. With a start on the right track in the earliest days, months, and years of their life, a child is much less likely to become another statistic of malnutrition. We educate each of the mothers on the importance of breastfeeding and the impact it has for their baby’s health. We will continue to focus on infant health, so no child has to suffer from malnutrition in the Thomazeau community.
