Mother’s Day with Maternal Health

The facts about maternal mortality in Haiti are sobering. The most recent data says that the maternal mortality rate is 359 per 100,000 live births and the infant mortality rate at 45.4 per 1,000 live births. That means that women in Haiti are almost 26 times more likely to die in childbirth than women in the United States and babies are 10 times more likely to die from childbirth-related complications.

Many of these births don’t happen in a hospital but instead happen on dirt floors in their own homes. There aren’t many clean and sterile places to give birth so at home deliveries are often the best option. Most women deliver alone, unattended by a medical professional or even a family member. This leads to complications during birth and in the worst cases, death for either the baby, the mother or both.

When a mother dies in childbirth, the whole community is impacted because mothers are irreplaceable.

No one should have to worry about losing two family members during what should be such a happy time.

While all of this is outrageous and heartbreaking, you can do something about it.

This Mother’s Day, give the gift of life.

Sponsor a mom in LiveBeyond’s Maternal Health program in honor of your mother for Mother’s Day. Your sponsorship combats infant and maternal mortality by providing medical care, vitamins, nutritious meals, and education to these expecting mothers. This sponsorship ensures that the women in the program, as well as the women who haven’t been reached yet, will have the access to the quality maternal care they need to have healthy and happy babies.
