They gather on Sunday mornings in an open-air pavilion beneath the hot Haitian sun, greeting one another with smiles, hugs, and handshakes. Pastor Sargesse, the LiveBeyond Church pastor, begins with a warm welcome before his sermon. A small choir leads the congregation in song, which brings people to their feet as they worship the Lord with music, singing, and clapping, expressing their love and devotion with heartfelt joy.
This is the LiveBeyond Church in Thomazeau, Haiti. As a structure, it is not impressive. In fact, it is hardly a structure at all. But in terms of faith, devotion, and worship, it is bigger than any American megachurch. These people, living in poverty in a land where violence, destructive storms, volatile politics, and food and water shortages are the norm, know where to turn for:
According to the Human Rights Watch 2023 World Report, Haiti is facing a crisis that has “harshly impacted businesses, schools, and hospitals and created shortages of basic goods including water and telecommunications.” The report also states, “more than 42 percent of Haiti´s population needs humanitarian assistance and up to 40 percent of the country experiences acute food insecurity, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).”
In the midst of this suffering, congregants of the LiveBeyond church know “all things are possible with God,” and believe faith can move mountains. They know God’s Word may not shield them from violence and hunger, but it will protect them from something far worse.
At LiveBeyond, we join them in that conviction and believe God is using YOU to move mountains for the people in Thomazeau, Haiti. Your donations have provided food and water, medical treatment, education, and a thriving farm where there once was barren land. Because of you, pregnant women receive prenatal care, babies are born healthy, children attend school, the community has food and water, and farmers learn how to grow crops. Sustained by nutrition, education, and spiritual guidance, the people of Thomazeau can see a future that holds job opportunities and a way of life that is not ruled by hunger, sickness, and fear.
